Fermoy’s Wheelchair Boat on “Nationwide”

Some years ago, members of Fermoy Town and District Angling Club took a group of school children on a fishing trip down the river. They were heartbroken when their boats’ lack of wheelchair accessibility meant they couldn’t accommodate Reece Treacy, a most eager young fisherman.

This inspired a fundraising project which led to the eventual purchase of An Spiorad Saoir John Mahon, Ireland’s only Mark III wheelchair-accessible fishing boat. Every year the club caters for hundreds of people with special needs.

Thanks to our friend Chris O’Donovan, we have a link to their appearance last year on RTE’s “Nationwide” here: http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0810/nationwide_av.html?2592443,null,228

It’s a lovely piece of television and it shows clearly the stunning beauty of Barnane and Castlehyde. It also highlights the great work of Kipper and the lads.
